How to Grow as a Follower of Jesus

Get to know God

Get to know God by reading the Bible daily. The Bible is God's words to us and was written to help us understand who he is and who you are and what his plan is for your life.

"But you must remain faithful to the things you have been taught. You know they are true, for you know you can trust those who taught you. You have been taught the holy Scriptures from childhood, and they have given you the wisdom to receive the salvation that comes by trusting in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realise what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work."

2 Timothy 3:14-17

Begin with the gospel of John or Mark, which are written eyewitness accounts of Jesus' life, death and resurrection.

Respond

Respond to God in prayer. Learn how to talk with him and share what's on your heart and mind. Thank him for what he's done for you and what he will do to change your life.

"Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done."

Phillipians 4:6

Obey

Obey God moment by moment. You will slip up, but God looks at the heart and he will help you to take it a step at a time.

“So why do you keep calling me ‘Lord, Lord!’ when you don’t do what I say? I will show you what it’s like when someone comes to me, listens to my teaching, and then follows it. It is like a person building a house who digs deep and lays the foundation on solid rock. When the floodwaters rise and break against that house, it stands firm because it is well built. But anyone who hears and doesn’t obey is like a person who builds a house right on the ground, without a foundation. When the floods sweep down against that house, it will collapse into a heap of ruins.”

Luke 6:46-49

Walk

Walk in the power of the Holy Spirit. We cannot do what pleases God in our own strength. Ask him for his power to live his way forever and then walk in faith.

"When I think of all this, I fall to my knees and pray to the Father, the Creator of everything in heaven and on earth. I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit. Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong. And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is.  May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God. Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think. Glory to him in the church and in Christ Jesus through all generations forever and ever! Amen."

"Don’t be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life. Instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit."

Ephesians 3:14-21, 5:18

Tell others

Tell others about Jesus through your life and words. When someone has changed our life, we want everyone to know about them so they don't miss out on sharing in what you've gotten to experience. Start with telling one or two people in your life that you have become a follower of Jesus.

"Jesus came and told his disciples, 'I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.'"

Matthew 28:18-20

"This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun! And all of this is a gift from God, who brought us back to himself through Christ. And God has given us this task of reconciling people to him. For God was in Christ, reconciling the world to himself, no longer counting people’s sins against them. And he gave us this wonderful message of reconciliation. So we are Christ’s ambassadors; God is making his appeal through us. We speak for Christ when we plead, Come back to God!'"

2 Corinthians 5:17-20

"Therefore I, a prisoner for serving the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of your calling, for you have been called by God."

Ephesians 4:1

Have fellowship

Form relationships with other Christians. When you become a Christian, you become part of God's family of other brothers and sisters in the faith. The Christian life is not meant to be lived on our own but with others who can love, teach and encourage you. The best way to do this is be part of a local church of believers.

"And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near."

Hebrews 10:25

"All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord’s Supper), and to prayer. A deep sense of awe came over them all, and the apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders. And all the believers met together in one place and shared everything they had. They sold their property and possessions and shared the money with those in need. They worshiped together at the Temple each day, met in homes for the Lord’s Supper, and shared their meals with great joy and generosity— all the while praising God and enjoying the goodwill of all the people. And each day the Lord added to their fellowship those who were being saved."

Acts 2:42-47
