Did Jesus Really Come Back to Life

The biggest evidence for Jesus being God is actually what happened after he died. Three days after Jesus died, he came back to life.

“Christ died for our sins, just as the Scriptures said. He was buried, and he was raised from the dead on the third day, just as the Scriptures said. He was seen by Peter and then by the Twelve. After that, he was seen by more than 500 of his followers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have died” (1 Corinthians 15:3-6).

After Jesus came back to life, he saw many people who could verify the claim. However, many don’t believe he came back to life, so let’s consider the alternatives.

What Are the Alternatives to Jesus Coming Back to Life?

Could he have just been unconscious? (Swoon Theory)

The Roman soldiers who were charged with his execution thrust a spear into his side to ensure he was dead (John 19:34-37). He also couldn’t have survived being embalmed. Furthermore, his tomb was guarded by enemy soldiers so he couldn’t have snuck out. And if he had merely fainted on the cross, he couldn’t have inspired his disciples to worship him as God.

Could the apostles have been sincerely mistaken? (Hallucination)

500 people saw him alive at one time and can’t all have been hallucinating. Also, if they were mistaken, his enemies could have produced the body and disproved the claims. Not to mention that some disciples were initially skeptical of Jesus’ reappearance (John 20:24-31).

Could it have been a myth created afterwards? (Myth)

Documentary evidence shows that parts of the Bible that recorded Jesus resurrection were written down as early as 56 A.D. and contain accounts from as early as 37 A.D., less that 5 years after his death. Not to mention, there were many eyewitness accounts. Since myths take at least 300 years to develop, there was no time between the writings and the event for this to take place.

No other alternatives are logical so all we have left is that he really is God and raised himself from the dead.

Why Is Christ Coming Back to Life So Important for the Christian Faith?

Jesus’ ability to come back to life shows that he is God, that he can beat death, and is able to pay the punishment for our sins. He paid the price, not just for one person, but for anyone who believes. The entire Christian faith hinges on Jesus coming back to life. The Christian faith has continued to this day, because Jesus Christ is alive to this day.
